February is honored as Black History Month. For 28 days, people across the United States recognize the achievements and contributions of African Americans. Taking the time to educate yourself on the stories of these people allows us to celebrate diversity and unite our society. To recognize this month in our community, SHA’s very own Black Student Union, or BSU, hosted a spirit week and mass.
From February 10 to 13, BSU members worked together to host a theme dress down and activity. For example, on Wednesday, the theme was “I Have a Dream” and everyone dressed up as their dream careers. Additionally, on Tuesday, the theme was “Appreciate the Arts”, and everyone represented their favorite Black music artist. These exciting and engaging activities present a creative way to educate our student body on how African Americans have impacted culture in the United States.
Another highlight was the mass that the BSU hosted with Shades of SHA. This mass emphasized treating others with respect, regardless of where they are from or what they look like. This powerful message was a perfect way to spread the deeper meaning behind Black History Month and how we can come together as a more inclusive community.
All in all, SHA’s BSU did a wonderful job in hosting their spirit week and mass. SHA girls are fortunate to have such a diverse and accepting community. Thanks to clubs like BSU, our school continues to grow in unity, understanding, and acceptance of all.
