Spirit Week Take 1

“Go big or wear your kilt”

That’s right—Spirit week. For most of the SHA girls, Spirit Week wasn’t new. They knew just how loud they had to scream, how crazy they had to look, and most importantly, how much fun it would be. For the freshman class… well, no one knew for sure what to expect. It was obvious from the big-eyed faces and the quiet cheers during the beginning of the week. Spirit week had been talked about since…December? Okay, so we knew it was a big deal. But an assembly at the end of every day of the week? Not to mention themes and a decorated cafeteria?. It was a lot to take in. So how did it come together, you’re wondering?

Day 1: Class Color and Musical Chairs. Okay, I won’t lie—this was talked over for a long time. I mean, yellow? It wasn’t easy—let’s just say that. Of course, there were plenty of ideas thrown around, but we wanted to be original. Minions? Too easy. M&Ms? Someone had to have done that already. Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches? (Yes, we did actually think about it). In the end, after the commotion died down and the ideas were pondered, we chose caution tape. Original? Yes. Not the easiest to do, but hey! It was our first day of our first Spirit Week! Although we were all a bit shy at the beginning, by the time we reached the end of the day, everyone was spirited. Whether it was our loud cheering or luck that got us 2nd place in musical chairs does not matter. We were just excited that we did it!

Day 2: Decades Day and Finish the Lyric. Now this was fun. The freshmen decade was the 60s, which meant flower power and tie-dye shirts all around. There was not an excessive amount of planning, but we all knew the basics. It was fun considering how colorful we were, and the surprise dress-down win only made the day more enjoyable.

Day 3: States Day and Wiffle Ball: Don’t mess with Texas. It was time to bring out the cowboy hats, boots, flannels, and jeans (putting on jeans for school again was not easy, I will admit). By day 3, everyone was really in the spirit. I even saw a girl with a strap-on horse! Hey, go big or wear your kilt! This day wasn’t planned out too much in advance, but luckily, the attire for this theme was straight-forward and everyone showed outstanding spirit. The wiffle ball tournament at the end proved just what a great student body we have here at Sacred Heart!

Day 4: Play on Words and TV Skit: Let me start by saying that I was warned by upperclassmen about this theme. Play on words was not easy. What could we do with freshmen? Well, the easy way out was simply—men. But then the 90s show Fresh Prince of Bel-Air became a thought and there weren’t a lot of other ideas, so why not? Picking correct attire for this day was a bit confusing for some. Some girls decided to be Will and wear neon baggy clothes, while others went with the Carlton look and decided to look preppy. No, we didn’t win the dress down, but our creativity was spot on. As for the TV skit, there was a tremendous amount of effort, but unfortunately it did not go exactly as planned. Despite the unexpected, after seeing the TV skits from the other classes, we’ll be sure to blow everyone away next year!

Day 5: Movie Day and Dance Crew: The last day of Spirit Week. The last day to really “go big or go home.” After a vote, the freshman class decided on Grease. The dress-up ideas were endless. You could be a greaser and wear the jeans, the leather jacket, and the white t-shirt. You could be Sandy, which meant leather pants, leather jacket, and red lipstick. Or, if you were cool enough to have a poodle skirt, that worked, too. To my disadvantage, I didn’t have a leather jacket or the leather pants or the poodle skirt. But so what? The best part about Spirit Week was improvising. It was the week where you could wear the clothes in your closet you never thought you would look at again. It was when your creative side really showed. Aside from the awesome costumes, the Dance Crew was amazing. Deciding to coordinate the freshman dance with our movie day theme made it a lot more fun for everyone! Win or lose, it was a great time.

And that’s a wrap for freshman year Spirit Week for the class of 2018. As for the crazy dress downs, we’ll look back and laugh. As for the more successful days, we’ll make sure to brag to future freshman classes. Overall, it was a week to always remember. Let’s not forget there is a first time for everything! I think I speak for the entire freshman class when I say I would not have changed one second of our first Spirit Week.
